career test

Before you begin this career test, make sure you have an open Word doc or pen and paper.

Q1: What are three topics you love to learn about?

The reason this is important is because you need to choose an industry you will be in. Therefore, you are going to need to become an expert in it and constantly consume the information.

The only way you can ever experience any success is by becoming the best at what you do. And the only way to do that is by learning everything there is about it. You need to become obsessed with every facet of that industry.

Write down three topics you love to learn about.

Q2: What problems are you good at solving?

All businesses provide a solution to a problem. Whether it is a product or service, it came into existence because it provides a solution. And the only reason a company will hire you is because you will become a part of their system as a problem solver.

Write down up to five problems you are good at solving.

Career Test Q3: What do you want your lifestyle to look like?

Before you decide what career field you should enter, you need to have a clear understanding of what your lifestyle will look like. Ever notice how people hate going to work? That’s because they never took the time to visualize what their lifestyle will look like.

You are going to spend more than half your waking life at your job. You need to make sure your job supports a lifestyle you care about.

Write down what you want your day to day life to look like. Be as specific as possible.

Q4: What does success mean to you?

As children we are bombarded with messages about what success is by our parents, family, friends, peers, and society. It generally has to do with money and the things you acquire. While this might make some people happy, don’t assume it will make you happy.

In fact, many adults are realizing that those things don’t really make them happy. What people are truly looking for is to be part of something they care about and is fulfilling.

Write down what success means to you.

Q5: Do you have any talents that come natural to you?

Within each one of us we all have a special gift or talent that is ready to come out and be polished like a gemstone. Rather than force yourself to be something you are not, allow your natural talents to come out and trust that they will be able to support you.

Write down your natural talents.

Q6: List at least five companies you absolutely love.

The best career to enter is in a field that you are already familiar with. Chances are you already know a lot about these companies and their industry and since you have already learned so much about them, it would be easier for you to enter a field in that industry then starting from scratch.

Write down a list of companies you love and why you love them. What do they do that you admire or respect?

Q7: What products or services do you love but think can be improved upon?

Remember, you are a problem solver. Any company that will hire you needs you to help them solve their problems. This means you need to be solution oriented and have ideas on how to improve their product or service. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in, everyone is providing a solution to make things better.

Write down a list of products or services you really like and how they can be improved.

Q8: How much money do you want to make a year?

Now before you go off and answer “$1 million dollars!”, remember that you need to have a clear understanding of:

What your lifestyle looks like.
What success means to you.

There are many people in the world who make a lot of money, but have no time to enjoy their money! But, there are also some people who were smart enough to make enough money to support a lifestyle that makes them happy.

This is why it’s important to know what success means to you and what you want your lifestyle to look like before you can answer the question how much money you want to make.

The other reason it is important to know how much money you want to make is because whatever industry you are going to enter, chances are you will start at the bottom and have to work your way up.

And that’s ok.

So long as you position yourself in a way so that as your career evolves and grows, you end up at a place making the kind of money you want to make.

Write down how much money you want to make a year.

Q9: What are five topics you can talk about all day without ever getting bored?

When you enter an industry, you are going to live and breathe this particular field. Therefore it’s important that you love to talk about it because you will. Every day. All day. So if you don’t want to end up like those people hating to get out of bed every morning, you better pick an industry you enjoy talking about.

Write down five topics you can talk about all day without ever getting sick of it.

Q10: What are you good at explaining or teaching to people?

Chances are at some point you have explained something to someone. If you can teach something it means you have a solid grasp of that particular topic.

Write down up to five things you can teach or explain.

Q11: What do people love about you?

You have a natural gift and I am sure at some point people have said things to you in passing that has reflected it in some way.

Write down what people love about you.

Q12: How would you spend your time if you had $100M in the bank?

Now before you answer this question, please assume that you have already travelled the world, purchased a home, bought yourself a new wardrobe, partied with your friends, and did all of the extravagant stuff. So fast forward a year or two and once you have done all of that, what would you do?

Write down how you would spend your time.

Q13: Name three people you really admire and what you admire about them.

Having role models and people to look up to is very important as it gives you a sense of direction and something you can emulate.

[bctt tweet=”What you see in other people you also see in yourself” via=”no”]

Write down three people you admire and what you admire about them.

Q14: Name three websites you visit all the time (besides social media and distracting time-killing websites.)

Chances are you already frequent some websites that curate information about an industry: pets, food, relationships, health, and so on. Remember, you will be consuming the information of whatever industry you enter so its important you pick an industry you care about.

Write down three websites that are not social media or time-killing websites that you like to read.

Q15: Have you ever convinced someone they should buy something? If so, what?

If you have ever convinced someone to buy something, then you have done “sales.” This means you were passionate about something enough that you asked someone to trust you and buy this product or service.

Write down anything you have convinced someone to buy.

Q16: Without quantifying it, what excites you most about life right now?

Don’t think about your career or try to justify it in some way, just write down the first three things that come to mind.

Q17: What do you care about?

What lights a fire under you? What are you passionate about? What is your mission in life? What do you want to accomplish before you die?

The Next Steps

The goal of answering these questions is to help you get clear on

– What industry you want to be a part of
– What success means to you
– What you want your lifestyle to look like

Once you are clear on that, then it is much easier to decide what skills you need to learn and what steps you need to take to move your career in the right direction.

My Personal Story

When I was 14 years old I found my passion: electronic dance music (yes Techno.) I decided to become a DJ and consumed everything about it. When I was 16 years old I met up with a friend of mine and we decided to produce some events and they became wildly successful (It’s called Electric Daisy Carnival and was just sold to Live Nation for $80M.)

With only an 8th grade education, I spent ten years in the music industry as an event producer and I also published a magazine.

And let me be clear, I was not very smart nor did I have any connections. I came from a poor family with nothing. That is the power of being authentic and following your passion.

After I got burnt out on the music industry I followed my next passion in personal development and wellness where I became publisher and sales director for Gaiam, the largest media company in the wellness space.

For twenty years I have been a CEO, publisher, sales director, director of business development, and chief marketing officer. I never had a specific direction per se. I just took the things I loved, became good at something that was needed in the industry, and built my career that way.

Keep in mind that skills can be learned. The hardest part is finding something you are passionate about so that you will have the desire and willingness to learn those skills.

Did you get that?

Once you are passionate about something, you will have the desire to want to learn whatever skill-set you need to be part of that industry. The reason so many people hate their job and get stuck is because they come from a survival mindset of doing whatever makes enough money

[bctt tweet=”Do what you love & the money will follow”]

For example: I knew nothing about event production, sales, or publishing. But I was so passionate about the industry that I learned those things. Most people focus on money first. This is not the best approach because you can make all the money in the world but end up hating what you do.

The truth is that if you love what the industry is all about, then you will want to learn everything about it and this will become a catalyst for you to grow as a person.

Here is the formula:

Step 1 – Follow your passion

Step 2 – Choose an industry

Step 3 – Learn everything about it

Step 4 – Figure out how you can add value and fit into it

Tips

1. Take Control Of Your Life

Either life happens to you or through you. If you do not have a clear goal or dream, then you will end up on autopilot going down wherever that path takes you until you decide to wake up from your slumber and take control of your life.

Wake up! This is your life.

2. Don’t Be In A Rush

This is your life we are talking about. Have the mindset of “tinkering” and testing things out. Have the willingness to go down a certain path and then if you find out you don’t like it, learn from the experience so you can refine what direction you can take. The only way to discover what you do like is by discovering what you don’t like.

[bctt tweet=”The only way to discover what you do like is by discovering what you don’t like”]

3. Follow Your Excitement

Your excitement is the compass needle that will guide you along this process. Anytime you are lost, stuck, or confused, just ask yourself this question, “What really excites me?” Listen to and trust your inner voice!

4. Get Advice From People You Respect

If you see someone who is living the kind of life you want to live, then by all means listen to their advice. That being said, don’t just do what other people tell you to do because they have their own bias. Remember, everyone will define success different from you so while it’s okay to listen to some advice, take it with a grain of salt.

5. Your Career Is A Platform To Help You Grow

What most people fail to realize is that their career is really just a platform that provides them a space to learn and grow as a human being. No matter what industry you choose, there will be challenges. And it is those challenges that will help you grow as a person.

So don’t try and find the easy way out, just focus on something you are passionate about because when the challenges come, you will be more willing to work through them and this will help you grow as a person.
